Cure is worse than the Disease

One of the on-line pregnancy calendars recommends using an ice-pack on hemorrhoids. Really? Anyone ever try that?

Ouch. I think not. What's wrong with Preparation H, or Tucks, or something?

I dunno about an ice pack, per se - sounds a little harsh. Maybe a very cold compress and I used Preparation H years ago, which was wonnnnnderful.

Good luck.

Dude. As a serious sufferer of butthole related issues (starting with the 'roids years ago), I can say that the best thing would be a cream that contains pramoxine, but I don't know if you can use that during pregnancy or when TTC. Other than that, a sitz bath (or a regular bath) of warm water can sometimes help with the itching or pain. But it really depends on what the issue is. Sometimes hemorrhoids get really bad because the anal sphincter spasms too tightly and restricts blood flow, in which case, ice will only make your problem worse, whereas warm water will make it better. BUT, if the problem is swollen blood vessels in absence of sphincter constriction, then warm water will only serve to further dilate those blood vessels, and ice would serve to constrict them (which would reduce the inflammation).

In my vast experience, the best thing to do is to use wet wipes when you wipe your bum, use some sort of hemorrhoid cream (esp one with pramoxine, if you can find it and if it's safe), and if there's pain associated, then try a warm bath (again, if it's safe for you to do so). That's my advice.

Wow Kate, you could write a Wiki entry about this. You have far superior knowledge than I. I just use a cream when it's a problem which has not been often (knock on wood).

Ugh! How awful! Thankfully I haven't experienced that, in fact, I've been the opposite this entire pregnancy... Hope they get better soon!

I've never tried that, but I've heard of it. That being said...it sounds painful!
