Chicken or the egg?

A woman is born with all the eggs she'll ever have. Ovaries are made when a female fetus is in the the womb. That got me to thinking; half of me was created when my grandmother was pregnant with my mother. When I was pregnant with Piccolina I was not only creating her but also half of the genetic material of my grandchildren.

In this way we are all tied to our grandmothers.

Mothers of daughters have a ties to their grandchildren.

There is a very tangible connection we all have to our female ancestors.

Women have a special connection to each other through the generations.

This universality feels so unique.

And, our mitochondrial DNA is entirely our mother's, and her mother's and her mother's before us.

As I held my son, I thought of that. I thought of a long line of women who had known joy and sorry, happiness and pain, and that they shared their DNA with Gabriel.

That is a comforting thought as I consider my mom and her mom and all the moms all the way back.

And, at the same time, I am sad that my daughter won't feel that connection to me.

Goodness Mrs. Spit, Even your comments leave me speechless.

Lori, I have so much empathy for what you are saying. I'm sad, too. But the alternative of not having a baby is even sadder (more sad?).
